The Cookie House

A few weeks ago I purchased a Gingerbread House Kit from Trader Joe’s.  I’ve always wanted to make one of these, and now that I’ve got kids, I can do so without my husband giving me weird looks.

“But it’s for the kids, honey…”

Yeah, right 🙂 <smirk>

So this post will be following along with the construction of the house.  I’ll be adding up to the minute…updates…on the progress of the construction.

First I read the instructions…hmm…egg-whites.  To ingest Salmonella, or not to ingest, that is the question.

So out into the frigid cold I go, schlepping down to the corner grocery store to buy pasteurized egg-whites that won’t poison my kids, because you and I both know that they are totally going to be licking the frosting of their fingers as we decorate this thing.

Don’t worry, I won’t invite you to have some, as more than a bit of toddler-saliva will get mixed in.

So, after whipping (pasteurized) egg whites until my arm was about to fall off, I folded in the powdered sugar, slapped the ‘mortar’ onto the A-Frame pieces and now we wait a half-hour until the foundation is secure….

Now I’m about to bring out the tray with the bare house, and the candies to decorate it with, and a plastic sleeve full of royal icing…

The girls are very excited about the little bowls of candy pieces and sprinkles (They don’t actually understand that candy is for eating, as they have never eaten any in their lives 🙂 ),…

The girls direct me where to pipe on the icing….this stuff sure is drippy!  I get a little creative, which doesn’t work out the way I plan, what with the drippiness and all…

They’re sure having fun flinging sprinkles onto the house…

The candy pieces slowly ooze off…

Ok, after a little time to semi-harden, the candy pieces can be re-stuck on…

Ok, they’re scraping the crusty icing and sprinkles off their hands….and onto the carpet…

So far they haven’t licked a single bit!!!  Good girls!

Ok, now we’re moving on to the tree, sorta have to prop that up against the house, they’re not going to wait a half-hour for it to harden in place…

And on go the little sugar people.  The girls are very careful and not breaking any!

Oops.

Mama broke one.  Repeated attempts to re-glue her legs on have met with failure…

Ok, we’ve sorta propped the broken one against the house, sitting in the snow, so it doesn’t look too obvious her legs have been broken off….

Ah…finished at last.  Quick cleanup to scrape some loose sprinkles off the table, a quick run with the vacuum to get the ones on the floor, a quick swipe with some diaper wipes on their hands

and

Voila!

We are finished!!

That was surprisingly easy, and considerably less mess than I expected.  Pretty good for a couple of 3.5yr olds!  (I think I probably made more mess than the twins!)

A happy and safe holiday season full of Blessings, for you and your family!
