Games my little squirrels play

While it’s true that not all is fun and games in our snug burrow, thanks to our girls’ newfound 4yr old maturity we can finally play games with them.  More or less.

The girls can take turns, follow simple rules (mostly), and get a real kick out of winning.  Even if it’s someone else doing the winning, we all celebrate.  Fun times for all!

One of the bigger snags in learning a new game is mommy and daddy’s chronic exhaustion, especially in trying to learn the sometimes over-complicated rules that come with the games marketed to the Pre-K set, but we parents get around that by making up our own rules, as the mood (and energy levels) suits us.

And the best thing of all is that each of these games were only $2 or less at our local thrift or dollar stores!!

Here is a list of our current faves:

Curious George Nutrition Game

Caillou Logico Puzzle Game

Grouchy Ladybug Game

Angelina Ballerina Game

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Silly Switch Game

Alphabet Lotto

Curious George Nutrition Game

In our never-ending quest to get healthy foods down the gullets of our little squirrels, we’ve inflicted this actually very fun game on them.  They love the cute pictures and being able to match up all the spaces on each food group game board.

Caillou Logico Puzzle Game

While I’m not such a fan of Caillou (a.k.a. The Whining Child), I did like the simplicity of this sequence card matching game.  Zanna especially likes to play with it on her own, trying to dig out the correct card for the next part in the sequence.

Grouchy Ladybug Game

The girls LOVE playing this game with their daddy!  It’s based on one of the Eric Carle books.  The twins enjoy collecting the aphids and getting the whack the game pieces with the whale’s tale, and my husband totally milks the “What do you say to get the aphid?” “Please!” aspect of the game, in yet another thinly veiled parental attempt to ingrain good manners into our little squirrels.

Angelina Ballerina Game

This is another game the girls really enjoy!  They love performing the dance moves, and they are also big fans of Angelina Ballerina anyway.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Silly Switch Game

This was a little game I picked up at our local dollar store, but the girls have really taken to it.  It helps them with turn-taking, patience and delayed gratification.  To make it less complicated, I just ignored any of the special landing places and treat them just like all the other color spots – makes things much smoother since the girls are still rather new at boardgame playing and less inclined to have the patience levels of older children.

Alphabet Lotto

Both of the girls love this game, and we either play it to find the letters, or to match the word cards to the letters they begin with.  Halle is still a little iffy on letter recognition, so this game should help with that.  I try to play this several times a week to help her with that in a fun way.  A bonus is that both the girls really enjoy helping me put the pieces away at the end, for some reason.

Is there a favorite board game that you play with your very young children? Please leave a comment and let me know!  Thanks!
