Here we are, our twin girls finally at 5 years of age. We’re still using the toddler carseats, but we’re itching to convert them to kiddie booster seats. We’ve reached the requirements for age and height, but we still have a few pounds to go.
The twins, particularly Halle, are a bit on the finicky side when it comes to eating. It also doesn’t help much that we’ve been feeding them mostly healthy foods, which aren’t that big on calories.
Because so many children are obese these days, it’s skewed the national average, and technically – according to the charts at our previous pediatrician’s office – it would seem as if our girls are underweight.
Ok, yes, they could both do with a few pounds more, but they’re hardly scrawny!
Nevertheless, I’ve tried getting them to be less picky about eating what’s put in front of them, because frankly, it’s for their own good.
Putting myself thru culinary contortions to make healthy food palatable to their pickly little palates has been difficult.
So I said “Screw it!” and went for bribes!
We award points if they’ve eaten all or most of their food each day, but sometimes that doesn’t always get the job done.
So, I’ve started going for relatively acceptable snacks. Cookies and cake are still very rare in our home, candy is mostly only for holidays and celebrations, but things like fruit snacks – y’know, those gummy-like fruit-flavored things? – have been added to our “sometimes ok” list, as well as homemade or juice ice-pops, and sometimes ice-cream, in addition to the usual fruit, graham crackers and other healthy snacks.
