Recently, I’ve begun getting in touch with my inner geek and have started making YouTube videos about the things I geek out over. It’s been great fun and now I have my own channel!
One of the things that delights my geeky self are online gift-exchanges. 😀 Redditgifts.com has dozens each year for different themes, and this past month I signed up for two – yarn (which I did not make a video about, sorry! :D) and SNACKS!!!
This time, both my own Santa and the person I was Santa for, were Canadian! Yay! (Btw, if you sign up for an exchange and agree to accept international partners (it’s optional), beware of shipping costs! Shipping can be so pricey that it’ll be more expensive than the gift you’re sending!)
So here’s the unboxing vid I made of the Canadian snacks my Santa sent me, including some snacks, like Smarties and Wine Gummies, I’d only heard of on BBC shows!
At the end of the video, there’s a giveaway for a Star Trek Chibi 3-pack blind bag that is open to folks in the USA/CAN that ends on 4/28, so please enter and good luck!
I love subscription boxes! From reading Gary Chapman’s ‘The Five Love Languages’, I know that one of my main ‘Love Languages’ is the giving and receiving of gifts, and wow, some of the subscription boxes out on the market nowadays are one heckuva gift!
Normally, I’m into the geeky, sci-fi fandom type of boxes, or even the ultra kawaii ones, but this time, I was happy to take a walk on the DIY & natural health side!
My journey began with Simply Earth’s Essential Oil Recipe Box for March 2017! ($39.99 USD per month for subscriptions, Simply Earth estimates that the value of the included items would be approx. $200 USD if purchased elsewhere individually.)
They sure pack a lot into that box! Mine came with 5 essential oils (100% pure, therapeutic grade), a stack of recipe cards on a binder ring for putting those oils to work, a couple of small glass vials for storing any diffuser blends I whipped up, and…..drumroll please….everything I needed to make my own….SOAP!!! That’s right, everything – molds and some melt-able soap base (a LOT of that was included, so I can make lots of soap!)
I’d never made soap before, but I see all these handmade soaps of every conceivable sort everywhere lately, and I wanted in on that – making my own, chemical-free soaps – ones that smelled exactly the way I wanted them to. So I was VERY glad to get a chance to take a crack at churning out my own sudsy goodness!
But first, a little licorice interlude – I dropped some of the box’s anise oil into my diffuser necklace and the whole world was smelling like licorice! YUM!!
Then I got to work, melting the base (really easy!) adding the ingredients, doing a little stirring…
And then a little pouring…
Then I needed to let it cool & harden (I popped it into the freezer and that speeded things up a bit…)
I popped it out of the mold – and voila! I had made my very own bar of Orange Cream Exfoliating Soap! Huzzah!! 😀
Here is my video review of this box if you’d like to watch me make the soap step-by-step!

One of my favorite winter holiday traditions is the giving (and hopefully receiving) of xmas cards. Whether your holiday greetings are for Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Festivus, Solstice, or the upcoming New Year, there most likely is a card for that.
Increasingly though, eco-conscious folks are swapping out their paper (aka dead tree) cards for spiffy new online versions!
I’ve been asked to host a giveaway for a very forward-thinking stationary website that in addition to its traditional paper offerings, also has some absolutely lovely online greeting cards as well! Paperlesspost .com!
Just a few quick minutes of clicking and I was ready to go with this whimsical online card for 8 coins per recipient (I added some fancy backdrops, fancy virtual envelope options and a reply card that are not shown here) 😀
They also have online versions of photo cards as well!
To make the giving of holiday cards even more exciting, I’m hosting a sponsored** giveaway for a prize of 1000 coins from Paperless Post! ($90 USD ARV)
Method of entry is a piece of cake: Simply write a comment below with your favorite holiday story! Touching, hilarious, shocking – let’s hear it! 😀
My own favorite story is the tale of the Great Rice Pudding Massacre!😀
Way back over a decade ago, I lived in Japan and decided to host a potluck holiday party for my ESL students. My husband had just finished his third go-round of wiping and mopping our dining room floor when disaster struck! I had just taken a rather large tray of rice pudding out of our mini-oven (Japan usually doesn’t have either baking ovens or rice pudding!) and set it on top of the oven to cool while I finished stirring a pot on the range. While my back was turned, the ENTIRE TRAY of rice pudding slipped off and fell – SPLAT!!! – face down on the floor! We madly scooped it back into the tray, sprinkled it with more cinnamon and re-wiped the floor just before our first guest rang the doorbell! I was mildly concerned that someone would find something weird in it, but that was very unlikely considering how thoroughly my husband had cleaned the floor beforehand. 😀
**RULES: Just one entry per person, and a winner will be chosen randomly from all who comment. Entry period ends 11/28/16 at 11:59pm and a winner will be chosen on 11/29/16. If you’ve ever had to transport a baby or small child from Point A to Point B in a motor vehicle, they you are no doubt well-acquainted with the reams of research needed to pinpoint the safest car seat for your chosen price-point range.
To make the chore a bit more exciting, I’ve been asked to host a sponsored** giveaway for a $50 USD gift certificate!
Method of entry is a piece of cake: Simply write a comment below with your favorite funny or disastrous child + car story! (If your child hasn’t been born yet, or you really don’t have any stories then simply let me know if you’ve ever seen a movie at a drive-in theater and what decade that was! – I saw my first drive-in movie in the 70’s 😀 )
Whether it’s a mention of how your children were talented in arching or bowing their backs to inhuman angles and then locking their body in that position so you absolutely could not buckle them in, or the relentless ear-splitting shrieks for repeated renditions of ‘Old MacDonald Has A Farm’ while you were trying to drive, or the revolting diaper fail that called for a haz-mat team to disinfect your car, we want to hear it! 😀
**RULES: Just one entry per person, and a winner will be chosen randomly from all who comment. Entry period ends 11/25/16 at 11:59pm and a winner will be chosen on 11/26/16. Winner will be contacted by email and will have 48 hrs to respond before a backup winner will be chosen. This giveaway is a partnership with Nakturnal, with a prize of a $50 gift certificate.
