Recipes for the #Brave !!

Admit it, you’ve got the most intense craving for Cullen Skink! (No, Team Edward, it’s not what you think!) Or how about some yummy Scotch Eggs?

Just click on the pic below (it will open in a new window as a PDF file) for your very own set of recipes inspired by the movie Brave, opening June 22 in U.S. theatres near you!

(I am SO looking forward to this movie! I love strong female characters, plus there are multiples in it! Triplets! And I love Scottish accents!)

Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney*Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson).

Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom.

When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources – including her mischievous triplet brothers – to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor. In Disney Digital 3D(tm) in select theaters.

BRAVE arrives in theaters everywhere on June 22nd!

Yummy treats for Mama!

I recently had the opportunity to sample some Torani Flavored Syrups.  You know, those cool looking bottles of flavorings behind the counter at your local Starbucks?  They put the peppermint in your Peppermint Mocha and the pumpkin in your Pumpkin Latte.

I received two bottles – Sugar-Free Vanilla and one of Torani’s seasonal flavors: Pumpkin Pie.

Much as I’d like a cup of coffee to try them with, I just can’t figure out my husband’s old fashioned drip coffee maker, so I decided to see what other kind of tasty beverages I could make for myself.

First I tried a slug of the Pumpkin Pie flavor in a cup of ice-cold vanilla coconut milk – OMG!!  It was like drinking a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped topping!!  So creamy and pumpkin-y!

Then I poured a little applejuice and water and mixed that with a glug of the Pumpkin Pie and it tasted like Pumpkin Juice!!  Just like they serve at Hogwarts!! (I’m sure all of you Harry Potter fans out there know what I mean!)

Tomorrow I’m going to buy some seltzer water and make pumpkin soda!

The Sugar-Free Vanilla, I’m sure is pretty good, but it has splenda (sucralose) in it, which I’ve heard information of concern about, so I’ve decided to give that one a pass.

But I did take a look at Torani’s website, and they have A LOT of interesting flavors including….BACON!!  I am SO wanting to try that one out!

Here’s a code you can use on Torani’s website for a 10% discount off your orders:  shespeaks

Games my little squirrels play

While it’s true that not all is fun and games in our snug burrow, thanks to our girls’ newfound 4yr old maturity we can finally play games with them.  More or less.

The girls can take turns, follow simple rules (mostly), and get a real kick out of winning.  Even if it’s someone else doing the winning, we all celebrate.  Fun times for all!

One of the bigger snags in learning a new game is mommy and daddy’s chronic exhaustion, especially in trying to learn the sometimes over-complicated rules that come with the games marketed to the Pre-K set, but we parents get around that by making up our own rules, as the mood (and energy levels) suits us.

And the best thing of all is that each of these games were only $2 or less at our local thrift or dollar stores!!

Here is a list of our current faves:

Curious George Nutrition Game

Caillou Logico Puzzle Game

Grouchy Ladybug Game

Angelina Ballerina Game

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Silly Switch Game

Alphabet Lotto

Curious George Nutrition Game

In our never-ending quest to get healthy foods down the gullets of our little squirrels, we’ve inflicted this actually very fun game on them.  They love the cute pictures and being able to match up all the spaces on each food group game board.

Caillou Logico Puzzle Game

While I’m not such a fan of Caillou (a.k.a. The Whining Child), I did like the simplicity of this sequence card matching game.  Zanna especially likes to play with it on her own, trying to dig out the correct card for the next part in the sequence.

Grouchy Ladybug Game

The girls LOVE playing this game with their daddy!  It’s based on one of the Eric Carle books.  The twins enjoy collecting the aphids and getting the whack the game pieces with the whale’s tale, and my husband totally milks the “What do you say to get the aphid?” “Please!” aspect of the game, in yet another thinly veiled parental attempt to ingrain good manners into our little squirrels.

Angelina Ballerina Game

This is another game the girls really enjoy!  They love performing the dance moves, and they are also big fans of Angelina Ballerina anyway.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Silly Switch Game

This was a little game I picked up at our local dollar store, but the girls have really taken to it.  It helps them with turn-taking, patience and delayed gratification.  To make it less complicated, I just ignored any of the special landing places and treat them just like all the other color spots – makes things much smoother since the girls are still rather new at boardgame playing and less inclined to have the patience levels of older children.

Alphabet Lotto

Both of the girls love this game, and we either play it to find the letters, or to match the word cards to the letters they begin with.  Halle is still a little iffy on letter recognition, so this game should help with that.  I try to play this several times a week to help her with that in a fun way.  A bonus is that both the girls really enjoy helping me put the pieces away at the end, for some reason.

Is there a favorite board game that you play with your very young children? Please leave a comment and let me know!  Thanks!
